Granville State School War Memorial

The Granville War Memorial was officially unveiled on Sunday 3 April 1921 by the Minister for Education, the Hon. J. Huxham.

The statue was made in Sydney and was procured for the Granville community by Mr F. W. Webb, a well known Maryborough monumental mason for the cost of 392 pounds.

An honour stone was erected 12 months earlier recording the names of those from the area who enlisted in WW1.( There are undoubtedly men from this area who did enlist and serve and do not have their name on the stone due mainly to the family not submitting the name for various reasons e.g. moving from the area. Also there are names of men not from this area but having family connections to the area).

At the time there were critics who thought a memorial especially in a school grounds was not the best way to remember the men who enlisted.

Some suggested a bursary at a high school might be a more fitting way to remember. However the Minister for Education, MR Huxham, gave permission for the memorial to be erected in the school grounds so as "-- every child attending the school would see it and become acquainted with the names of their soldier forefathers and their deeds of bravery."

The school's principal, Mr J Lennon and his pupils, planned eleven garden beds around the memorial each representing one of the fallen with their initials inscribed in a floral design.
